Destiny 2 Update 9.7.0 is not just another weekly cleanup pass. Bungie calls it the final major patch for Destiny 2, which means this update is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the game's long-term shape.
The short version: Monument of Triumph is now the center of gravity, the Portal has been pushed out of the spotlight, Ops moved into the Director, and several older reward paths have been folded into a more permanent structure. If you are coming back after a break, do not log in expecting the old route to make sense on muscle memory alone.
Monument of Triumph is the new anchor
Monument of Triumph is built as a broader celebration of Destiny 2's history, not just a normal seasonal checklist. Bungie framed it as something for longtime players, returning Guardians, and newer players who want a clearer way to chase rewards across the game's current content.
That matters because Destiny 2 is moving away from the usual live-service treadmill. The game is still playable, and Bungie says smaller maintenance updates can still happen, but Update 9.7.0 is the big long-term setup. Treat it like a new map of the house, not a quick furniture move.
The Director matters again
Bungie's patch notes say the Portal screen has been deprecated, with Ops now living at the bottom of the Director. Translation: stop looking for the same old entry point and check the Director first.
That sounds simple, but it will catch returning players. Destiny has always been great at making you spend five minutes in menus before you fire a shot. This update at least gives the Director more of the job again.
Gambit and seasonal rewards changed
Gambit was upgraded into an Ops category and received a reward refresh. If you wrote Gambit off years ago and never looked back, this is your reason to at least check the new reward path before ignoring it again.
Seasonal events are also being retired. Bungie's Monument of Triumph messaging says rewards tied to Festival of the Lost, The Dawning, Guardian Games, and Solstice can be earned through engrams on a Monument of Triumph vendor. That is cleaner than waiting for a calendar window, even if it means relearning where the loot lives.
What players should do first
- Start at Monument of Triumph and see which Triumphs feed the rewards you actually care about.
- Check the Director before assuming an activity was removed.
- Look at Gambit rewards if you need new gear or collection progress.
- Review event weapon engrams before chasing old event loot through outdated advice.
- Save a little patience for the menus. This update changes where things live.
What to do now
Update 9.7.0 feels like Destiny 2 getting packed for long-term storage, but in a way players can still use. That is a weird spot for any live game. Some players will love having more permanent reward paths. Some will hate the finality of it.
Either way, the move now is simple: learn Monument of Triumph, relearn the Director, and stop following old seasonal habits without checking where Bungie moved the loot. The game is not gone, but the old routine has absolutely been reassigned.
