Baldur's Gate 3 Honour Mode punishes improvisation when the plan has no exit. Before every major encounter, decide who can flee, which resource stays in reserve and how the party will handle the boss's Legendary Action. Damage matters, but recovery and route discipline finish runs.

Do not use Honour Mode for blind discovery

Honour Mode adds a single-save structure, tougher bosses and rules that close several easy combat loops. Learn new dialogue branches, traps and encounter triggers on a lower difficulty first. A failed conversation can start a fight before the party is positioned.

Reach level 5 through safer work

Early Honour Mode is dangerous because low-level characters have limited health, few spell slots and weak recovery tools. Complete exploration, dialogue quests and manageable fights before taking on the hardest Act 1 bosses. Reaching level 5 gives martial classes Extra Attack and casters access to third-level spells.

Build an exit into every fight

Keep one mobile character away from ledges and crowded melee. Misty Step, invisibility, enhanced movement and sanctuary effects can save a run when the main plan collapses. Fleeing to camp and reviving the party is better than protecting a failed attempt.

Research Legendary Actions

Honour Mode bosses gain reactions and actions that can punish familiar tactics. Read the enemy sheet before committing attacks. Triggering a reaction with the wrong character can expose the rest of the party to a follow-up that did not exist on Balanced or Tactician.

Prefer reliable builds over complicated builds

A multiclass combination is useful only when it works at the level you are currently playing. Delaying Extra Attack, important feats or higher-level spells can make the vulnerable early game worse. Build around accuracy, initiative, control and a second source of healing before chasing a perfect endgame combination.

Carry the boring supplies

  • Potions of Speed and healing potions for emergencies, not routine damage.
  • Scrolls that provide movement, control, summons or guaranteed damage.
  • Arrows and throwable items for characters whose main plan is blocked.
  • Camp supplies so resting does not depend on one risky detour.

Treat ledges and elevators as real threats

Separate party members around moving platforms and avoid ending turns beside drops when enemies can shove. Several Honour Mode losses come from navigation and positioning rather than a boss's raw damage.

The safest run is not the one with the strongest damage screenshot. It is the one that can survive a missed attack, a failed save and a bad initiative order without losing the campaign.
