A detective game should require more than collecting every highlighted object. The games below give the player evidence, leave room for an inference, and then require an action that proves the conclusion was understood.

1. Return of the Obra Dinn

A frozen moment aboard the Obra Dinn.
Return of the Obra Dinn makes identity and cause of death the player's responsibility.3909 / Lucas Pope

Obra Dinn asks for names and causes of death across an entire ship. Frozen scenes provide faces, positions, accents, uniforms and consequences, but the ledger only accepts a specific conclusion. Progress comes from cross-referencing details that initially look unrelated.

2. The Case of the Golden Idol

A deduction scene in The Case of the Golden Idol.
Golden Idol requires names, actions and motives to fit the evidence.Color Gray Games / Playstack

Golden Idol turns each scene into a vocabulary problem. The player identifies people and objects, then uses those facts to complete an account of what happened. Guessing can fill one blank, but later cases demand a theory that makes every blank agree.

3. Shadows of Doubt

A procedural city investigation in Shadows of Doubt.
Shadows of Doubt lets the player choose how to gather and connect evidence.ColePowered Games / Fireshine Games

Shadows of Doubt is less authored and more procedural. Addresses, fingerprints, employment records, cameras and witness schedules become evidence inside a simulated city. The strength is freedom: the player decides which lead is worth pursuing and how much trespassing the answer justifies.

4. Outer Wilds

Exploration in Outer Wilds.
Outer Wilds turns knowledge into the main form of progression.Mobius Digital / Annapurna Interactive

Outer Wilds is not presented as a police story, but its progression is almost entirely investigative. A discovery on one planet explains how to reach a location on another. The game rarely awards a stronger tool; it gives the player enough information to use an ordinary tool differently.

5. Her Story

The video database interface in Her Story.
Her Story makes search terms the player's investigative tool.Sam Barlow

Her Story limits the investigation to a video database and a search box. Every useful result suggests another word, contradiction or event to search. The interface never confirms a complete solution, so the end point is the player's confidence that the testimony finally makes sense.

Choose the kind of proof you want

Choose Obra Dinn or Golden Idol for fixed answers, Shadows of Doubt for procedural cases, Outer Wilds for exploration built on knowledge, and Her Story for an interpretation the game does not grade. Each one makes deduction part of play rather than decoration around a quest marker.
