Mafia III Adds 60 FPS to Current Consoles Without Save Transfers
Mafia III: Definitive Edition has native PS5 and Xbox Series versions with 60 FPS gameplay. Check free upgrade eligibility before starting a fresh save.
Do not switch your unfinished Mafia III campaign to the new console edition expecting it to continue. Mafia III: Definitive Edition now supports 60 FPS gameplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but 2K says PS4 and Xbox One saves and achievements cannot transfer to those native versions.
The October 8, 2026 release marks the original game's tenth anniversary. Existing owners may qualify for a free upgrade, with exceptions worth checking before you buy another copy. Steam also received a separate update aimed at old mission and tracking problems.
Console gameplay supports 60 FPS, not every cinematic
2K advertises 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements for the native PS5 and Xbox Series editions. Real-time cinematics run at that rate too, while some pre-rendered video scenes remain at 30 FPS. A 30 FPS video scene therefore does not, by itself, show the gameplay has dropped to the same rate.
The console notes also list fixes for campaign and DLC progression, trophy and achievement tracking, lighting and vegetation rendering. Game Pelt has not benchmarked these versions or replayed the affected missions. These are announced changes, not a guarantee of flawless frame pacing.

Check purchases, subscriptions and discs separately
For PS4 owners who bought Mafia III: Definitive Edition before October 8, 2K describes a free PS5 upgrade for digital and physical copies, including qualifying bundles. Digital owners should find the PS5 edition in the PlayStation Store and add it to their library.
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. Insert the disc, select the upgrade offer from the game hub and download the PS5 version. The PS4 disc must stay inserted when you play. A copy claimed as a PlayStation Plus monthly game does not count as a digital purchase for this upgrade, according to 2K's FAQ.
On Xbox, the instructions give digital owners a library or store route, depending on whether they own a collection or the standalone edition. For purchases on or after October 8, 2K says the Xbox cross-generation edition should already be in the library. PlayStation owners may still need to find and add the new version through the store.
The Xbox disc FAQ points to separate Xbox licensing instructions. Do not assume inserting any old disc grants the same entitlement as a digital purchase. Verify the offer on your account before spending money or deleting an installation you still use.
Steam targets mission stalls and achievement progress loss
The PC patch is a different part of the anniversary update. Its notes name Get Enzo Conti, Kill Tommy Marcano and the Epilogue among places where players could become unable to progress. They also address lost achievement progress when closing the game during a session, plus wiretap and junction-box problems after Stones Unturned.
New frame-rate caps include 120, 144, 180 and 240 FPS. The patch adds a window-border toggle and changes multi-monitor handling, including a reported problem with the cursor escaping the window. Those caps are selectable limits, not a promise your PC can maintain the corresponding frame rate.
The developer also lists lighting, draw-distance and stability repairs. Apply the update before assessing whether a previously blocked mission or achievement works now; the patch notes alone are not proof that every long-running problem is gone.

A fresh replay and an unfinished campaign need different decisions
If you want to replay Lincoln Clay's story, check your upgrade entitlement and make sure you launch the native console version. The official console launch trailer shows the release being offered, but does not establish how it performs on your hardware.
If you are halfway through a PS4 or Xbox One campaign, keep the old version and its save available. The new edition's improved achievement tracking does not change the separate rule that previous-generation achievements and saves cannot transfer. Choose the upgrade when you are ready for a fresh run, not because you expect it to pick up your existing campaign.
