Sega is starting the second year of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds with the right kind of crossover: Bayonetta is joining the roster, and she is free.

Bayonetta is the first Year Two racer

Sega revealed Bayonetta ahead of Tokyo Game Show and described her as the first free guest character coming during Year Two. A new trailer shows the Umbra Witch behind the wheel, which is a sentence the series is somehow able to make look normal.

The company has not published the full Year Two schedule. More details are due during the World Championship Finals and Year Two Showcase on October 9, so anything beyond Bayonetta is still a promise rather than a roadmap.

Free characters are the point

Crossovers are easy marketing. The useful detail is the price. Kart racers can turn a growing roster into a toll booth, especially after launch, and Sega is at least opening Year Two without charging for the headline character.

That does not automatically make the entire plan generous. Tracks, vehicles, events, and the pace of updates will matter more than one recognizable guest. Players should judge the October showcase by what it adds to racing, not by how many logos appear in the trailer.

The practical takeaway

If you already own CrossWorlds, there is no reason to buy anything to get Bayonetta when she arrives. If you are waiting to see whether Year Two has enough substance to pull you back, wait for October 9. The free character is good news. The rest of the season still has to earn the return trip.
