WoW Forever Fishing Guide: Level 1–300
Level Fishing from 1–300 in WoW Forever, choose the right zones and lures, keep valuable catches, pair Fishing with Cooking, and use the new campsite benefits.
Fishing in WoW Forever is a secondary profession, so every character can learn it without giving up Mining, Herbalism, or another primary profession. It supplies Cooking, feeds Hunter pets, supports Alchemy, earns gold from targeted catches, and now contributes useful objects to campsites.
The efficient route is simple: train Fishing and Cooking together, cast in water that matches your current skill, use a lure when catches start failing, and fish pools whenever they sit near your quest route. You do not need to stare at the same bobber in Stormwind until level 60.
Quick start
- Learn Fishing and Cooking. Both are secondary professions and can be trained by every character. Ask a city guard to mark the trainers.
- Buy and equip a Fishing Pole. Keep a stack of lures in your bags. Fishing without the pole equipped is an impressively quiet way to accomplish nothing.
- Put Fishing on your action bar. If it is missing from the spellbook, open the Professions home screen and drag the Fishing button from there. This is a reported beta interface quirk.
- Stand near fishable water and cast. Click the bobber when it splashes. A cast can run for up to 30 seconds.
- Cook useful catches before moving zones. Buy the matching recipes and keep the food that helps your class or sells.
Blizzard’s Classic primer confirms Fishing and Cooking as secondary skills available alongside your two primary professions.
Fishing ranks and progression stops
| Rank | Skill cap | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 75 | Train from a Fishing trainer. |
| Journeyman | 150 | Return to a trainer before you cap. |
| Expert | 225 | Buy Expert Fishing: The Bass and You from Old Man Heming in Booty Bay. |
| Artisan | 300 | Complete Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme in Dustwallow Marsh. |
Buy the Expert book from in Booty Bay. Start the Artisan quest with . Hover either name for coordinates and click to copy the waypoint.
Forever beta reports currently describe the familiar train, train, manual, Nat Pagle progression. Requirements can still move before release, so check the live trainer when approaching a cap.
Fast Fishing leveling route
These are practical bands, not hard locks. Your total Fishing skill includes the pole, lure, gear, food, and other temporary bonuses. If a zone gives repeated failed catches or junk, use a stronger lure or step back one band.
| Fishing | Where to fish | Useful catches | Route note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–50 | Capital city or starting-zone water | Raw Brilliant Smallfish, Raw Slitherskin Mackerel, Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper | Stay beside a trainer and Cooking supplies. Move once catches become reliable. |
| 50–100 | Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore, The Barrens, Silverpine Forest | Longjaw Mud Snapper, Rainbow Fin Albacore, Deviate Fish | Fish pools while questing instead of camping one shoreline. |
| 100–150 | Wetlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, Ashenvale, Stonetalon Mountains | Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish, Raw Sagefish, Oily Blackmouth | Use a lure when moving into harder water. Keep oily fish for Alchemy demand. |
| 150–225 | Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Dustwallow Marsh | Raw Mithril Head Trout, Raw Rockscale Cod, Firefin Snapper, Greater Sagefish | Buy Expert Fishing before 150. Pools are worth detouring for. |
| 225–300 | Feralas, Tanaris, The Hinterlands, Azshara, Plaguelands, Winterspring | Raw Redgill, Nightfin Snapper, Sunscale Salmon, Stonescale Eel, Winter Squid | Complete the Artisan quest before 225. Use strong bonuses in the toughest zones. |

Fish pools before open water
- Pools target useful catches. Open water gives a broader table. Pools make Oily Blackmouth, Firefin Snapper, Stonescale Eel, and wreckage easier to pursue.
- Updated pool visuals help in Forever. Current beta players report that nodes are much easier to see even without fish tracking.
- Do not force a bad circuit. If another player is clearing every pool ahead of you, keep questing and fish the next shoreline. Empty water does not owe you a route.
- Cast from a safe bank. A fishing pole is not a combat weapon. Clear nearby enemies before staring at the bobber.
The catches worth keeping
| Catch | Main use | Game Pelt call |
|---|---|---|
| Raw Brilliant Smallfish / Slitherskin Mackerel | Early Cooking levels and cheap food | Cook these immediately instead of banking stacks you will never revisit. |
| Deviate Fish and Whimsyfin | Transformation recipes and novelty demand | Forever adds Whimsyfin recipes. Prices will be volatile during beta and launch. |
| Oily Blackmouth | Blackmouth Oil for Alchemy | Keep or sell it when potion makers are buying. Pools make targeting easier. |
| Firefin Snapper | Fire Oil for Alchemy | Useful profession material rather than ordinary vendor fish. |
| Nightfin Snapper | Mana regeneration food | A practical caster and healer catch. It is time-sensitive in the Classic baseline. |
| Stonescale Eel | Stonescale Oil for higher-level Alchemy | One of the better late-game value catches. Night fishing traditionally improves availability. |
| Winter Squid | Agility food | Seasonal in the Classic baseline. Do not build a permanent route around it without checking the live calendar. |
Fishing poles and lures
| Item | Purpose | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Fishing Pole | Basic tool | Buy one from a Fishing Supplies vendor and equip it before casting. |
| Shiny Bauble | Small temporary skill bonus | Cheap protection against failed catches in early or slightly harder water. |
| Bright Baubles / Aquadynamic Fish Attractor | Stronger temporary bonus | Use these when a new zone produces junk or missed catches. |
| Strong Fishing Pole and upgraded quest poles | Permanent skill bonus | Replace the basic pole when the upgrade is convenient, not by abandoning an efficient route. |
| Arcanite Fishing Pole | Top Classic-style pole reward | A major Stranglethorn event prize and still reported as the strongest pole in Forever beta. |
Fishing bonuses improve your effective skill. They do not make the skill bar rise faster by themselves, but they reduce failed catches and junk in water above your natural level. Spend a cheap lure to save a run of dead casts.
Pair Fishing with Cooking
- Buy recipes before leaving a region. A bag of raw fish becomes far more useful when it also gives Cooking skill and a food buff.
- Cook for your current role. Forever updates many foods with stat bonuses and small experience benefits. Keep what helps your character; sell or share the rest.
- Do not overfarm one recipe. Move when both Fishing and Cooking have better options. Hundreds of obsolete fish are not preparation. They are a storage problem.
- Check the live recipe tooltip. Forever adds new fish and revises old food. Whimsyfin is one reported beta example, but exact effects remain subject to tuning.
Forever campsite Fishing objects
Blizzard confirms that professions gain campsite objects beginning at skill 20, with advanced Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses. A current beta summary on Blizzard’s forums reports the following Fishing progression.
| Fishing skill | Camp object | Reported benefit |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | Fishing Bowl | Reported to grant an all-stat campsite buff. |
| 140 | Fishing Wrack | Reported to add the stat buff, lures, and a better chance to find uncommon fish. |
| 300 | Fishing Hut | Reported to add a better chance to find rare fish. |
The skill 140 and 300 names and effects above are current player-reported beta values, not final launch promises. Camp buffs also follow stacking rules, so use the strongest relevant version rather than assuming every similar effect piles together.
Legacy bonuses that help anglers
- Luremaster. Current beta reports say fishing with a lure has a 50% chance to catch an additional fish.
- Working Overtime. Reported to increase the chance of gaining profession skill.
- Dedicated Study. Reported to increase the character’s lowest trade skill once per 23 hours.
Legacy choices compete for points. Take Fishing bonuses because you plan to use them across the account, not because one afternoon at a pond made them look urgent.
Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza
Blizzard’s official event overview explains the basic event: fish Speckled Tastyfish from Stranglethorn pools and return the required catch in Booty Bay. Forever beta reports expand the winner group to the first 50 anglers and add Extravagant Extravaganza Coins for more rewards.
- Set your hearth or travel plan before the event begins.
- Carry strong lures and clear bag space before the start.
- Choose a coastline with several pool spawn points and a clean route back.
- Do not stop to sort bags while the event clock is running.
- Treat the first-50 format and coin rewards as beta tuning until Blizzard publishes final event rules.
Fishing mistakes that waste time
- Staying in water that is too difficult. Repeated failures mean your effective skill is too low. Add a lure or move.
- Ignoring pools. Open-water skill-ups are fine, but targeted pools produce catches with clearer uses.
- Separating Fishing from the rest of the session. Cast while waiting for a party, traveling through a fish-rich zone, or gathering Cooking stock.
- Vendoring valuable oily fish. Check Alchemy demand before clearing Blackmouth, Firefin, or Stonescale catches from your bags.
- Missing the rank upgrade. If skill stops moving at 75, 150, or 225, the fish are not the problem.
