Holy Paladin is a durable single-target healer in the WoW Forever beta. The build is at its best keeping a tank stable through dungeons, cleaning Poison and Disease effects, and using Paladin utility to prevent damage before another heal is needed.

Blizzard’s Forever class overview confirms the new Holy tools, while the October 1 beta notes remain the authority for the level-30 test build. If the live client changes a trainer level, connection, or tooltip, trust the client first.

The short version

  • Use a healing set for dungeons. Favor Healing or Spell Power, Intellect, Mana per 5, Spirit, and useful spell critical chance. Armor type is secondary before plate unlocks.
  • Carry two weapon sets. Use a two-hander for ordinary solo quests and a caster one-hander plus shield when healing.
  • Holy Light handles large damage. Flash of Light handles small, fast top-ups from level 20. Holy Shock becomes the instant emergency heal at level 30.
  • Do not heal every missing point. Let efficient casts, natural regeneration, and drinking between pulls do their jobs.
  • Keep Righteous Fury off while healing. Extra Holy threat is useful for tanking and exactly the wrong thing for a dungeon healer.

Leveling approach

RouteRecommendationWhen it fits
Dungeon-first HolyUse the full talent route below from level 10.Best when you regularly heal groups and accept slower solo kills.
Fast solo routeLevel Retribution and carry a healing set.The fastest option for mostly solo questing. Early dungeons can still be healed with current spell ranks and Intellect gear.
Mixed Holy routeStay Holy, use a two-hander outdoors, and swap to a shield in groups. The practical middle ground when you want one build and frequent dungeon access.

Race choices

RaceStrengthWhy choose it
HumanSpirit and dependable weapon utility.Spirit works with Reverence, while weapon support improves the outdoor half of the build.
DwarfStoneform and mace utility.A strong defensive option for dangerous dungeons and a natural fit for one-handed healing maces.
UndeadThe only Horde Paladin choice.Cannibalize helps restore health and Mana between fights, while Will of the Forsaken answers dangerous control effects.

The standard level-30 route does not include Light’s Vigil. That party-healing capstone sits deeper in the tree and belongs to later-level builds. Legacy talent points can change what is reachable, but they are account progression rather than a baseline assumption for a new character.

Stat priority

PlaystylePriorityPractical rule
Dungeon healingHealing or Spell Power > Intellect > Mana per 5 > Spirit > Spell Critical > StaminaFavor throughput and a usable Mana pool. Reverence makes Spirit work while casting, and Illumination rewards critical heals.
Progression safetyIntellect > Stamina > Healing Power > SpiritUse this when a small health pool is killing you before better healing stats matter.
Solo questingWeapon DPS > Strength or Attack Power > Intellect > Stamina > SpiritA current two-hander saves more time outdoors than wearing a weak caster weapon between dungeons.

Do not reject cloth or leather only because a Paladin can wear mail. Before plate becomes available, the best healing item is the one with the strongest useful healing and Mana package. Keep a separate outdoor set if possible.

Gear progression and level-30 targets

Forever itemization is still changing, so this is an unranked shortlist rather than a permanent best-in-slot list. Hover or focus an item name to inspect its current beta tooltip data, then compare it with the live client before replacing a piece.

Do not delay level 30 for one rare item. A coherent healing set with current spell ranks and enough Mana is more valuable than a single perfect drop. Recheck every tooltip after major beta itemization updates.

Auras, seals, and blessings

ChoiceDefault useSwitch when
Concentration AuraYour casts are being delayed by damage.Use Devotion for heavy physical damage or a resistance aura for a matching encounter.
Blessing of KingsGeneral party buff at level 20.Use Wisdom on Mana users, Might on physical damage dealers, or Salvation on a high-threat damage dealer.
Seal of LightGroup utility at level 30.Use Seal of Righteousness for solo damage. Coordinate Judgements when another Paladin is present.
Righteous FuryOff while healing.Enable it only when intentionally tanking.
ProfessionRecommendationWhy it fits
Herbalism + AlchemyBest self-sufficient healer pair.Supplies Mana potions, useful elixirs, and saleable materials while leveling.
Mining + EngineeringBest dungeon utility pair.Bombs and devices add control and recovery options that the Paladin toolkit lacks.
Mining + BlacksmithingBest armor-crafting route.Supports crafted mail now and plate later, but it can consume the silver needed for spell training.
Cooking + FishingLevel both secondary professions.Food buffs, recovery supplies, and campfire options all reduce downtime.
First AidUseful but secondary.Bandages save Mana between pulls and remain valuable after Lay on Hands empties the Mana bar.

Consumables and campfire buffs

CarryUseRule
Current waterRefill Mana between pulls.Drink early. Waiting until empty turns a short stop into a long one.
Mana potionRecover during a dangerous pull.Health and Mana potions share a cooldown, so decide which resource is actually ending the pull.
Healing potionStay alive without spending casting time.Use when healing yourself would let the tank die.
BandagesRecover between pulls.Save Mana when no damage is incoming.
Intellect or healing elixirIncrease the dungeon healing budget.Do not spend more on consumables than the content requires.
Incense CandleHerbalism camp buff for Intellect.Use when Arcane Intellect or an equivalent effect is absent.
Mana WellAlchemy camp buff for Mana regeneration. It does not stack with equivalent Blessing of Wisdom effects; take the stronger available version.
Fish BowlFishing camp buff for all stats. It competes with equivalent Kings-style effects.

Ability priority at a glance

Set the slider to your current level. Abilities disappear until the character can actually learn them. Read each row left to right, but react to the size and type of incoming damage instead of forcing every button in sequence.

  1. Holy ShockEmergency heal or movement.
  2. Holy LightLarge or predicted damage.
  3. Flash of LightSmall, fast top-up.
  4. PurifyRemove harmful effects early.

  1. Holy ShockCatch sudden health loss.
  2. Blessing of ProtectionSave a non-physical attacker.
  3. Lay on HandsPrevent a death now.
  4. Hammer of JusticeStop a dangerous enemy.
  5. Divine ProtectionSurvive pressure on yourself.

  8. Retribution AuraUse when survival is comfortable.

Healing technique and Mana control

  • Pre-cast Holy Light. Start before the expected hit, then move to cancel if the tank no longer needs it.
  • Bind at least two Holy Light ranks. Use the maximum rank for dangerous damage and a lower rank for predictable medium hits.
  • Use Flash of Light for small damage. It is quick and cheap, but repeated small casts still empty the bar if they are unnecessary.
  • Holy Shock is a recovery tool at level 30. Its instant cast is worth more when movement or sudden damage would beat Holy Light.
  • Dispel before healing through a removable effect. One Purify can prevent several future heals.
  • Drink when a pull costs roughly one-third of the Mana bar. Tell the tank before they start the next pack.

Dungeon positioning and party rules

RuleWhy it matters
Stand at healing range, not inside the pack. You can see incoming adds, avoid cleaves, and keep casting while the tank moves.
Keep the tank targeted through party frames or mouseover macros.Target switching should not delay a heal or make you lose track of the dangerous enemy.
Watch Forbearance.Divine Protection and Blessing of Protection can block another immunity from being used immediately.
Do not Blessing of Protection the tank by accident.Physical enemies leave the protected target and may run directly to you or another party member.
Use Hammer of Justice proactively.Preventing a heal, fear, or heavy enemy cast is cheaper than repairing the damage.
Rebuff after deaths.Forever blessings last much longer than Classic’s old short-duration versions, so do not waste globals refreshing them every pull.

Useful Holy Paladin macros

These macros heal a friendly mouseover first, then a friendly target. Add them through the in-game macro menu and keep the normal spell available while testing.

UI setup checklist

TrackSetupReason
Party health and dispellable effectsUse readable party frames near the center of the screen.Purify should be a quick decision, not a search through tiny icons.
Tank target and cast barKeep the tank and dangerous enemy visible.Pre-casting is easier when you can see the next heavy attack or spell.
ManaShow a clear percentage or numeric value.Pull pacing changes when the healer drops below the next safe-cast budget.
Holy ShockTrack the 10-second cooldown from level 30.The instant heal is most useful when its availability is obvious.
ForbearanceTrack it on yourself and protected allies. It prevents a second immunity from being used immediately.
Righteous FuryPlace the buff where it is impossible to miss.Accidentally healing with it active creates avoidable threat.

Current beta limits

This guide stops at level 30. Light’s Vigil, later Holy Shock ranks, plate armor, and the complete endgame healing set are outside the current beta-cap build. The level-30 gear list will keep changing as players discover itemization from newly opened dungeons.

Blizzard’s Forever deep dive documents Holy Shock, Infusion of Light, Reverence, Voice of Truth, and Light’s Vigil. The current development notes document the level cap and the latest Paladin changes. Blizzard’s Paladin overview supports the class’s healer, shield, and heavy-armor identity. The point order, gear shortlist, priorities, macros, and dungeon rules are Game Pelt recommendations.
