Waylaid Crates are random beta drops that ask for one bundle of profession materials. Complete the order, take it to a Merchant’s Favor camp, and spend the currency on profession recipes and other rewards.

The efficient route is simple: finish your first crate, open chests while leveling, and only complete repeat crates when the requested materials are cheap.

How Waylaid Crates work

  • Loot or buy a crate. Beta players report them from outdoor enemies, dungeon enemies, and treasure chests.
  • Choose one listed material bundle. The options are alternatives. You do not need every item shown.
  • Fill the cheapest valid option. Check your bank, professions, guild, and the Auction House before committing.
  • Turn it in at Redridge Mountains 9.6 70.9 Marcy Baker for Alliance, or The Barrens 50.1 29.3 Dokimi for Horde.
  • Spend the Favor on a planned recipe. Buy for the character you are playing, especially when the result is Bind on Pickup.

Current beta reports put the first completed turn-in at 50 Merchant’s Favor and repeat turn-ins at 5. Treat those as beta values, but complete the first crate unless its only valid option is wildly expensive. Forever uses Favor for recipes rather than the old Season of Discovery reputation grind.

Best way to farm Waylaid Crates

MethodVerdictWhy
Questing route with outdoor chestsBest defaultYou gain XP, quest progress, cloth, profession materials, and crate rolls at the same time.
Chest loop near the turn-in campBest focused farmShort travel makes a rare drop less disruptive. Competition can ruin the route on a busy layer.
Dungeon run with questsGood passive farmMobs and chests add chances while the group also earns gear and XP. Do not run a bad dungeon only for crates.
Raw mob grindingWeak unless the mobs also matterNo official drop rate is published, and beta reports describe long dry streaks. Pair kills with cloth, skins, a quest, or another farm.
Buying crates from playersPrice-dependent shortcutUseful when crates are cheap. Remember that the filling materials are a second cost.

Should you fill, sell, or save a crate?

Expensive Auction House materialsSkip, bank, trade, or sell the crateRepeat turn-ins are reported to give far less Favor. Do not burn your mount money for five currency.
Recipe is an immediate upgradePay only after doing the full cost checkAdd the crate, materials, recipe, and crafting cost. A blue item is not automatically a bargain.
Recipe will be obsolete soonSave the FavorLeveling gear loses value quickly. Permanent recipes and useful consumables age better.

Which recipes should you buy first?

  • An immediate Bind on Pickup upgrade. Buy it only while it is still useful to the character earning the Favor.
  • A reusable consumable or enchant. These usually age better than one leveling gear slot.
  • A tradeable craft with real demand. Check the binding rule before assuming the recipe can make gold.
  • A planned alt item. Save for this only when the alt and profession path already exist.

Beta reports list many recipes below level 30 at 30 Favor, with higher-level patterns costing more. Recheck the vendor after major builds because prices and stock are active tuning.

Current beta bugs

Blizzard’s October 1 known-issues post lists crates failing when the requested quantity exceeds an item’s maximum stack size. Apprentice Curiosities can also reject Greater Magic Essence and incorrectly accept Lesser Magic Essence. Blizzard says fixes are planned for a later build.

If a valid material refuses to enter the crate, stop spending and check the current known-issues thread. Buying more stacks will not fix a broken order.

Official sources and beta warning

Blizzard’s known-issues post confirms current bugs. The farming discussion, Merchant’s Favor discussion, and crate-value discussion are player reports hosted on Blizzard’s official forums.

The farming route and spending rules are Game Pelt recommendations. Drop rates, Favor rewards, recipe prices, vendor stock, and camp locations can change during beta.
