The Long Dark Blizzard Guide: Stop Traveling Before Visibility Fails
A safe blizzard plan is decided before the snow closes in: shelter, fuel, route markers and a hard turnaround point.
A blizzard in The Long Dark is usually lost before it starts. The player leaves tired, follows a route without shelter options, or keeps walking after visibility has already removed the safest return path. The fix is a travel rule: if the next shelter cannot be reached with a reserve of warmth, energy and daylight, turn back.
Choose shelter before choosing the destination
Mark caves, cabins, vehicles and wind-protected structures along the route. A useful shelter breaks the journey into short decisions. It does not need to be comfortable; it needs to stop wind, permit a fire where possible and give the player time to reassess condition.

Carry the fire, not only the fuel
Firewood is dead weight without ignition and tinder appropriate to the current difficulty. Carry a reliable starter, enough fuel to survive a delay and one accelerant for a genuine emergency. Do not consume the last hot drink at the start of a routine walk. Keep it for a temperature collapse or forced stop.
Repair before the weather decides for you
Wet or damaged clothing loses the margin that makes a short navigation error survivable. Repair the outer layers before a long trip, keep the best wind protection equipped and avoid unnecessary struggles that damage clothing. A spare item is useful only when its warmth justifies the weight.

Navigate by connected landmarks
Do not aim across open space at a destination that cannot be seen. Follow a road edge, cliff, power line, riverbank or other continuous feature. Drop low-value markers only at turns that are genuinely ambiguous. A line of random objects wastes resources and can point in both directions.
Use a hard turnaround point
Set the return condition before leaving: a time, temperature change, fatigue level or loss of the next landmark. Obey it. The common mistake is continuing because the destination feels close. Distance is not the only cost; the return may face worse wind, darkness and lower condition.
If the blizzard arrives
Stop sprinting without a confirmed direction. Move to the nearest known windbreak, treat immediate temperature loss, and make a fire only where it can survive. If safe shelter is reached, wait. A planned delay costs food and fuel. A blind march can cost the run.
The Long Dark rewards boring preparation. Shelter points, repaired clothing, fire materials and an early retreat prevent more deaths than carrying another weapon into weather that cannot be fought.
