The Long Dark Iron Road Brings Train Survival on October 27
Iron Road starts Early Access October 27 with a train, Anna Island and roughly 30km of railway. The full five-island world is a later plan.
The Long Dark: Iron Road enters Early Access on October 27, with a train that serves as transport and shelter. The Survival Mode expansion starts with Anna Island and roughly 30 kilometers of railway. The five-island world and 100km-plus network are the larger plan, not everything players get on day one.
Hinterland announced the expansion on October 15. This is DLC for The Long Dark's Survival Mode, not a standalone sequel, and the Steam listing requires the base game.
The opening build starts on Anna Island
The Prototype Train is the main addition: restore it, keep it running and use it as a mobile shelter while exploring Cauldron Island. It is designed for the new island setting only. You will not be taking the train back onto Great Bear.
The Fulmar boat connects Desolation Point on Great Bear to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. Some equipment and resources from the new area can be brought home. Our blizzard travel guide covers the existing on-foot survival problem separately; the expansion does not turn Great Bear into a railway map.
Steam's description of the current build lists the first island, approximately 30 kilometers of track, the first version of the train, a portable whale-oil heater and the first 16 wax cylinders. Those recordings help uncover the history of the abandoned industrial setting.

The full roadmap goes considerably further: five islands, more than 100 kilometers of rails, additional train systems and new tools. Later islands are planned for future Early Access updates. Do not treat the complete roadmap as the October 27 content list.
Hinterland estimates 18 to 24 months of development on Steam, while explicitly warning that it could take longer. The team also expects prices to rise as development progresses. That is not a confirmed completion date or a published launch price.
Iron Road is worth watching if a train-based survival expansion interests you. Wishlist it through the Steam listing, then judge the opening build rather than paying for an assumed finished world. If the full island chain is what you want, wait for those additions. Our The Long Dark hub will keep the expansion coverage separate from the existing base-game guides.
