Annihilation Battle is the headline

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve just picked a very clear lane for longtime fans: the next mission reveal is built around Annihilation Battle, the series' big-score mission type where the job is not simply to follow a corridor and clear one objective. You are dropped into a wider field of targets and asked to decide what is worth deleting first.

The PlayStation Blog post confirms Mission 7 sends players against Sotoan forces with key facilities, supply lines, and a time limit. That matters because it gives the mission a cleaner tactical loop: destroy targets, manage ammunition, return to reload, then choose the next priority before the clock squeezes you.

The new wrinkle is chain destruction

The most interesting detail is not just that the mode is back. It is that Ace Combat 8 is leaning into chain destruction. Producer Manabu Shimomoto describes flammable objects that can explode and destroy surrounding buildings, plus structures that can be damaged when downed aircraft crash nearby.

That sounds small on paper, but it could change how these missions feel. If the best run is no longer just a clean sweep, but a smart route that turns enemy bases against themselves, Annihilation Battle becomes more than a score chase. It becomes a planning problem at jet speed.

The story is also pushing bigger threats

The trailer and post also name some of the campaign's larger pieces: the Sotoan Shadows Unit, the Megafloat Fatsia, and the Tonitrus Spear satellite weapon. In normal Ace Combat fashion, the sky problem is only half the problem. There is always some impossible machine waiting to make the battlefield weird.

Ace Combat 8 launches for PS5 on October 2, 2026. The smart read for now: Bandai Namco is not just selling a new campaign, it is selling missions that let players make their own mess inside the sandbox.
