Ace Combat 8 — Difficulty Can Change Without Changing Flight Controls
Bandai Namco explains two flight control modes and four difficulty levels. Pilot is the default, and difficulty can be changed later.
Flight controls and difficulty are separate choices in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. Bandai Namco's September 18 explanation confirms two handling modes and four difficulty levels, with difficulty changeable at any time.
Standard turns the aircraft when you push the left stick sideways. Expert uses that movement to roll the plane; you then pitch to turn. Choose between them for the handling you prefer, then set the combat challenge separately.
Rookie, Pilot, Veteran and Elite
Pilot is the default and Bandai Namco's recommendation for newcomers or returning players. Rookie focuses on story access and supports optional reduced damage from collisions with terrain or structures. That assistance reduces damage; it does not promise collision immunity.
Veteran can increase enemy health or aggression depending on the mission, make missiles harder to evade and place more emphasis on loadout-dependent recovery. Elite demands quicker battlefield decisions and target prioritization. These are the publisher's descriptions ahead of release, not measured balance results.

Ace Combat 8 launches October 2 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Pilot offers the recommended starting point, with the option to change difficulty as you learn the missions.
