C.A.R.R.I. comes back on October 20, and the basic idea is easy enough: help people, finish contracts, get CyberAcme Commendations. The part that catches people out is Marathon’s queue logic. A crew, a solo Runner and a Rook all get paid for different things.

Here are the numbers. Crews get 4 Commendations for helping a crewmate finish a contract objective. A solo non-Rook gets 6 for completing one of their own objectives. A Rook gets 5 for making it out alive. Solo Runners and Rooks get another 5 if they exfil with other players.

That sounds clean. It is, right up until you enter a crew playlist alone and wonder why your contract paid nothing.

Your queue decides what counts

C.A.R.R.I. does not look at how lonely your run felt. It looks at the activity you joined.

In a crew, the paying action is helping with someone else’s contract objective. You get 4 Commendations each time you help a crewmate finish one. If everybody runs off in a different direction to work on their own contracts, you are missing the entire point of the crew reward.

A solo non-Rook gets 6 for each individual contract objective they complete. This is the cleanest route if you want to work through your own contracts without coordinating three different shopping lists.

A Rook gets 5 for a successful exfil. No personal contract is required for that base reward. Get in, scrape together what you can and leave before greed turns a decent run into a corpse.

Crew fill off is not a solo queue

This is the nasty bit. Entering a crew activity with fill turned off can still count as crew play. You may be physically alone, but the game has not moved you onto the solo reward rules.

Players ran into this during the previous C.A.R.R.I. event. They completed their own contracts in no-fill crew activities and saw no Commendations because the crew rule expects them to help a crewmate. There is no crewmate, so there is nothing eligible to assist.

If you want 6 Commendations for your own objective, pick an activity that Marathon actually classifies as solo. Do not trust the empty squad slots. They are not the same thing.

A shared exfil is worth five more

Solo Runners and Rooks can earn another 5 Commendations by extracting with other players. They can be another solo, a Rook or a full crew. You do not need to deploy together. You just need to make the same extraction work.

For a Rook, that takes the payout from 5 to 10. For a solo Runner, it sits on top of whatever you earned from contract objectives during the run.

Take the bonus when the situation looks safe. Do not throw away a finished contract because a stranger crouched twice and suddenly feels trustworthy. Five extra Commendations are nice. Losing the exfil still sucks.

The currency goes straight to your Vault

CyberAcme Commendations do not take up a loot slot. When a qualifying action pays out, the currency goes directly to your Vault. Bungie’s original C.A.R.R.I. rules put the stack limit at 100.

Spend it in the C.A.R.R.I. Armory under the CyberAcme tab. Previous versions offered rotating weapons, Reputation Packs, Salvage Crates, Sponsored Kits and other gear. Some stock refreshed daily while other items were one-time purchases.

Check the live Armory after the October 20 reset before deciding what to save for. Bungie has not published a complete October 20 price list, and an old shopping guide is a good way to hoard the wrong amount.

If your Commendations are missing

First, make sure C.A.R.R.I. is live. It starts October 20 and runs through the end of the Nightfall Refresh. Bungie also fixed a looping Night Marsh CyberAcme guidance contract on October 13, but that patch did not change the published payouts.

Next, check what the game thought you were playing. Crew members only get paid for assisting a crewmate’s objective. Solo non-Rooks get paid for their own objectives. Rooks get paid for successful exfils. The shared-exfil bonus only lands if the extraction succeeds.

Then look in the Vault. The currency is deposited there instead of appearing as normal loot. If the event is active, the queue is correct and the right action still pays nothing, note the activity, contract and Vault total before sending the issue to Bungie. That is a lot more useful than trying the same broken route five more times.
