Sea of Thieves Sail Design Competition: Entry Rules and Prizes
Sea of Thieves is accepting original galleon sail designs until October 23, with a January community vote deciding which set joins the game next March.
Sea of Thieves is asking players to design a complete set of galleon sails, and the winning entry is planned to become an in-game cosmetic for the game's ninth anniversary next March.
Entries are open until October 23 at 23:59 UTC. Rare will select three finalists, work with each artist on a final concept and put those designs to a community vote in January 2027.
How to enter the sail competition
Create an original design showing all seven sails used by a Sea of Thieves galleon. Rare provides an official template, but artists can use another format as long as every sail is visible and the relative sizes make sense.
Post the finished design on X, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok or Threads with #SoTSailDesignComp. Discord entries can be placed in the dedicated sail-design competition channel on the official Sea of Thieves server.
There is no limit on the number of entries. Designs cannot use another company's intellectual property, licensed material or generative AI. Check the full terms before submitting; losing a good concept to a preventable rules mistake would be a rough way to sink it.
Three designs reach the January vote
Rare's artists will select three entries based on creativity, originality and whether the design fits Sea of Thieves. The team will then collaborate with those artists before the finalists enter a public Community Hub vote in January 2027.
The winning sail set is planned for release during the ninth-anniversary celebrations beginning in March. Rare says every player will be able to acquire it, and the creator may also be referenced in the item's name or description.
The winner gets a year of premium passes
The winner also receives enough Ancient Coins to cover the Season Pass Premium Tiers released between the ninth and tenth anniversaries. Each of the other two finalists receives 999 Ancient Coins.
The official Sea of Thieves competition announcement includes the template, submission links and complete judging process. Entries close October 23, so leave enough time to check the seven-sail layout before posting.
